The main purpose of TRM is to ensure independence of the test from the ATE instrumentation using a virtual device concept.

The TRM provides a simple interface to standardize the calls to the ATE's switching system.

This interface mainly features:

- a configuration file that contains all test unit adapter routing data,
- a set of library functions to load that data and apply or remove connections,
Because all TUA wiring information is contained in a separate file and not compiled into the test application code, it can be created and maintained separately.
Relay use is referenced and counted, ensuring that if multiple connections share a single relay, this relay remains closed until the last connection is removed.
